Art of the Motherland is set to showcase “Resonance,” the first solo exhibition of emerging Ghanaian artist Isaac Ako Sowa, available online from 17 February to 13 April 2025. This exhibition invites global audiences to delve into the cultural, historical, and symbolic narratives that underpin Sowa’s artistic practice.

The inspiration for “Resonance” stems from a significant lecture given by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, at the British Museum on 19 July 2024. In his address, Otumfuo emphasised the importance of Ashanti artefacts, many of which were taken during colonial conflicts, as symbols of resilience and cultural sovereignty. Sowa’s exhibition reflects these themes, exploring identity and heritage while honouring the enduring legacy of these significant artefacts.

These items are not merely historical objects; they are repositories of cultural memory for the Ashanti people. Sowa’s work aims to highlight the vital role these artefacts play in contemporary discourse surrounding repatriation and cultural stewardship. His pieces resonate with a broader conversation about the intersection of the past and present, as well as the ongoing efforts to reclaim cultural heritage.

Through “Resonance,” Sowa engages with the continuing conversations sparked by Otumfuo’s lecture, drawing attention to the complexities of cultural ownership and the responsibilities involved in preserving artefacts for future generations. The exhibition provides a unique online platform for reflection, allowing viewers worldwide to connect with the rich history and heritage of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Known for his evocative exploration of cultural narratives, Isaac Ako Sowa has carved a niche for himself in the contemporary art scene. His artistic expressions challenge and expand the boundaries of conventional storytelling, inviting audiences to engage deeply with the narratives behind his creations. Sowa’s work not only celebrates the preservation of Ashanti artefacts but also invites contemplation on their role in shaping contemporary identity.

In a statement, Sowa expressed his passion for cultural heritage, saying, “I’ve always been captivated by the stories embedded in our cultural heritage. Through Resonance, I hope to honour the Ashanti Kingdom’s legacy and spark conversations about identity, history, and the value of preserving our collective past for future generations.”

The exhibition will be hosted on the Art of the Motherland platform, making it accessible to art lovers and cultural enthusiasts around the globe. By utilising an online format, “Resonance” seeks to transcend geographical boundaries, inviting a diverse audience to engage with the artistic narrative and its broader implications.

As the exhibition approaches, anticipation builds for the opportunity to witness Isaac Ako Sowa’s artistic vision and the important dialogues it aims to inspire regarding cultural identity and heritage. With “Resonance,” Sowa continues to push the envelope of artistic expression, reaffirming the significance of art as a tool for cultural connection and understanding.
