New South Indian Restaurant Draws Crowds in Derby

A newly launched South Indian restaurant in Derby has drawn more than 1,000 diners through its doors since opening in August. The restaurant, House Boat, located on St Peters Street, specialises in the authentic flavours of Kerala, South India. It offers a tapas-style menu featuring dishes such as dosas, thalis, and unique seafood options, prepared by chefs from Kerala.

The restaurant, launched by Johns Geo and his team, has quickly gained popularity among Derby residents, with Geo expressing gratitude for the enthusiastic response. “We’re thrilled by the warm welcome in Derby and grateful to everyone who’s visited us,” he said. “Many have said we should have opened here years ago, and we’re humbled by the positive Google and Tripadvisor reviews. It’s encouraging to be busy every day, and we appreciate Derby’s kindness as we establish ourselves in the city.”

The 60-seat House Boat restaurant occupies the site of the former Swiss Cottage Café, which the team has completely revamped into a vibrant venue blending Keralan and Derby cultural elements. Inside, murals painted by London-based street artists feature giant tigers, elephants, a Derby Ram, and a Rolls-Royce. Authentic anchor lights sourced from India enhance the interior’s unique aesthetic, and every table is adorned with a miniature wooden house boat stocked with cutlery and napkins.

Outside, House Boat has created a beer garden that can accommodate an additional 30 diners, set to open next year. Even before its launch, inquiries have poured in from people looking to hire the outdoor space for private events. Co-owner Vinod Payyoor Manghat shared his excitement about the beer garden, noting its rarity among Indian restaurants. “This restaurant was a long time in the making, and we wanted the interior to feel special, featuring traditional items from Kerala. We’re thrilled with the results, and the outdoor dining area made St. Peters Street the perfect location,” he explained.

House Boat’s menu has already become a major draw, featuring not only traditional South Indian dishes but also popular aromatic biryanis and hearty meat dishes. To celebrate its launch, House Boat is currently offering a lunch and dinner deal: £10.99 with a pint or £8.99 with a soft drink. This offer has attracted new diners and helped boost the restaurant’s popularity as they prepare for Derby’s upcoming entertainment venue opening next year.

Geo noted that he was initially cautious about footfall, anticipating a slower start. However, the enthusiastic turnout has exceeded expectations. He believes House Boat’s focus on authentic South Indian cuisine is filling a gap in Derby’s food scene, which has few such dining options compared to the more common North Indian cuisine.

House Boat is open daily from 12 noon to 10 pm and has quickly established itself as a lively addition to Derby’s dining options, with dozens of five-star reviews from satisfied customers.
