Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched Amazon GameLift Streams, a new cloud-based game streaming service aimed at helping developers expand their audience without the need for complex infrastructure.

The fully managed service allows developers to stream high-quality, low-latency games directly to any device with a web browser, reducing the need for downloads and installation. It is designed to help developers increase player engagement, open new revenue streams, and boost monetisation opportunities.

    Streaming Without Infrastructure Costs

Amazon GameLift Streams enables developers to upload their games onto GPU-powered AWS cloud servers and start streaming in minutes with minimal code modification. It supports AAA, AA, and indie games across devices including PCs, smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs.

Running on AWS’s extensive global network, the platform delivers 1080p at 60 frames per second with low latency, ensuring a smooth gaming experience. Developers can also scale their streaming capacity on demand, only paying for what they use.

Chris Lee, General Manager and Head of Immersive Technology at AWS, said the service has the potential to change how games are played and distributed.

“With over 750 million people playing games on AWS each month, we’ve long supported game development and innovation. Amazon GameLift Streams can turn billions of everyday devices into gaming platforms without developers having to rebuild their code or manage complex infrastructure.”

    New Opportunities for Game Developers

By using Amazon GameLift Streams, developers can:

    • Stream games instantly without requiring players to install software.
    • Create their own game streaming platforms or subscription-based services.
    • Offer playable demos on websites, influencer videos, and online stores.
    • Enable faster game testing for internal teams and player feedback.
    • Build immersive virtual experiences, such as metaverse-style game worlds.

    Industry Adoption

Several major gaming companies are already using Amazon GameLift Streams to enhance player engagement.

Jackbox Games, known for popular party games such as Quiplash and Trivia Murder Party, is using the service to reach a wider audience beyond traditional gamers, particularly those using smart TVs.

Xsolla, a global video game commerce company, has integrated Amazon GameLift Streams into its cloud gaming platform, allowing developers to stream PC and mobile games directly via a pay-as-you-go model.

Ludeo is using the technology to deliver interactive game demos in online ads, boosting engagement and sales. A recent Hitman World of Assassination campaign saw engagement rates five times higher than traditional video ads.

Meanwhile, Bandai Namco Entertainment has adopted the service to stream its Gundam metaverse, allowing fans to experience virtual events, shop for merchandise, and interact with other players in real-time.

    Expanding Amazon GameLift

Amazon GameLift Streams is an extension of Amazon GameLift, AWS’s existing dedicated game server hosting service. The platform is already used by major developers including Ubisoft, Zynga, and Warner Bros Games, and has been tested to support up to 100 million concurrent players.

With this latest innovation, AWS aims to make high-quality cloud gaming more accessible, allowing developers to reach more players globally without the burden of infrastructure management.
