Smiths Detection, a leading global provider of threat detection and security screening technologies, has announced that its iCMORE Automated Prohibited Items Detection Systems (APIDS) algorithm has received official approval from the Netherlands’ National Coordinator for Security and Counter-terrorism (NCTV). This marks a significant milestone for the company, as it becomes the first and only supplier to achieve certification for this innovative technology, setting a new industry benchmark in airport security.

The certification process was rigorous, with the algorithm being tested, verified, and validated by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), a certified test centre recognised by the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC). This extensive testing confirms that the iCMORE APIDS algorithm meets strict EU and Dutch requirements, solidifying Smiths Detection’s reputation as a trusted and innovative partner in detection technology.

The iCMORE APIDS leverages artificial intelligence to identify a comprehensive range of prohibited objects at airport security checkpoints. The system automates the detection process as bags pass through CT security screening machines, streamlining operations for security personnel and enhancing passenger safety. The algorithm not only improves security but also contributes to a faster and more seamless experience for travellers, reducing waiting times at checkpoints.

With this approval, Dutch airports can now implement advanced detection capabilities, ensuring they are equipped with the most reliable tools to identify prohibited items and strengthen security measures. The deployment of the iCMORE APIDS represents a major advancement towards full automation in airport security, facilitating alarm-only viewing and minimising the need for manual screening interventions. This shift is expected to lead to substantial operational savings for security operators.

Cymoril Metivier, Global Director Digital at Smiths Detection, expressed enthusiasm about the certification, stating, “This certification reaffirms our commitment to being best in class, offering unmatched and proven capabilities that meet the highest certification standards. We aim to set a new industry benchmark as the trusted partner for cutting-edge detection solutions. Our focus remains on delivering innovative and revolutionary technologies that elevate passenger safety and experience, while ensuring compliance with the highest evolving security standards.”

The approval from NCTV indicates that the Smiths Detection APIDS algorithm adheres to both the EU APIDS Standard 1 requirements, as detailed in EU Decision C(2015) 8005, and the additional national detection standards outlined in the Netherlands’ regulations. This confirmation underscores the algorithm’s reliability and effectiveness in addressing contemporary security challenges in aviation.

As Smiths Detection continues to push the boundaries of technology in the aviation sector, this recent achievement is a testament to the company’s dedication to enhancing airport security. The successful certification of the iCMORE APIDS algorithm positions Smiths Detection at the forefront of innovation, reinforcing its role in safeguarding critical operations across the aviation industry while ensuring a safer experience for passengers.
