Türkiye’s bid to have döner kebab recognised as a traditional product in the EU has faced objections from Germany. Bereket Döner, a leading Turkish culinary company, has stepped forward with academic research to defend Türkiye’s cultural heritage.

During a press conference in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner unveiled a study providing compelling historical evidence of döner’s Turkish origins to counter Germany’s claims.

“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”

The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, combines historical artefacts, engravings, and documentation from the Ottoman period, underscoring döner’s role as a cultural and culinary connector.

Food as a Force for Togetherness

“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” added Tekdemir. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”

Alongside its academic efforts, Bereket Döner revealed plans to expand its Döner Point brand in Europe, starting with Germany. By introducing authentic Turkish döner to European audiences, the company seeks to enhance its global reputation.

“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” Tekdemir stated. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”

Bereket Döner’s work ensures that Turkish döner is celebrated both as a heritage dish and as a symbol of cross-cultural appreciation.
